....after lots of searching, high and low, for the perfect meat goat....we have found him ~ this is Carnitas, Maura's meat goat for our County Fair.... Even after being part of a science experiment (using pumpkins as a dewormer ~ hmmmm.....) he is still incredibly shy. Maura has been diligently trying to make friends with him. A very slow process, but she should eventually, be able to teach him how to brace, and be a good show goat, he is a gorgeous Boer goat, with lots of potential!

Julie & Julia
And a Merry Christmas was had at Sassafras Ranch this year....we have had 9 lambs born so far this season, two of them to Remy's Bergamot, Floppa's sister. Their names are Ribbon and Licker, and Licker looks just like Floppa at this age. Bergamot is an amazing mom, she even tries to take care of Thelma's little boy, Beau, and runs to him when Thelma leaves him behind. Aaaah, the ranch life sure has been good to us... I am reminded of this every single time I watch the kids playing or doing chores outside my window... carrying hay, bottle feeding the calves, tossing grain at the chickens and guineas, or just running around being chased by the sheep.... and then there was also that time when, after watching for about an hour from inside the house how Mr. Sassafras was unsuccessfully trying to bring in the cows, Maura was able to coax them in just by talking to them... and here is Julia, my super tame, gorgeous, new romagnola cow. Don't be fooled by the antlers, she really is a cow : )
The kids were great at keeping the secret, and they tried really hard to distract me while she was being led to my window, antlers and all....

The Christmas Tree
A few months ago we went to our local farmer's market. They were having a gourd festival, complete with corn maze, and an actual pumpkin patch... (I really dislike the fake ones, where they place their pumpkins on a lawn, or in those giant cardboard boxes), we went on a lovely tractor ride, and that was when we discovered that they not only grow vegetables and pumpkins, but pine trees as well.
~ but I already knew this... the Christmas tree patch was started decades ago by a 4H group in this nearby town which was led by the kids' oil painting teacher as a fundraising program for the organization. Lovely Lady.
Anyway, Remy decided right there and then that his year not only would we be having a live Christmas Tree, but he would be the one cutting it. So we bundled up and set out on our adventure.
We got there and started walking around, Remy was running everywhere, he was so excited! They had different kinds of pines, all different sizes.... tough decision, but once we decided which kind of tree we were getting, it was only a matter of getting one the right size. As soon as we chose the one, Remy got down underneath and started sawing away. He only stopped for a few minutes after a needle poked him in the eye, but other that that, it was smooth sailing...

Keets will be keets
or the keets that will be....
After several (disastrously) failed attempts at hatching out our lovely guineas, success at last! It did unfortunately involve capturing the mother hen along with her 14 hatchlings, as well as keeping them confined to a rather small enclosure (rabbit hutch), and having the 15 of them completely panic at the sight of anyone that dared come near them, with all the screeching and screaming their panic involves.... the family was released today.

At the State Fair
Remy was supposed to show Luci at the State Fair last week. However, he decided he will save his talents for next year when he will get to show LittlePea at next year's County Fair. Maura was quick to rise up to the challenge ~ she loves walking with Luci around the barn, and talking to people about her lovely goat, as well as posing for their pictures : ) She is also the one with all the show ring experience....
Perhaps one of my favorite parts, was that her friends came out to support her; no small feat considering the extreme heat and all the waiting involved!
....but wait is what we all did: she was supposed to show at 6 p.m., but ended up showing close to 10....! She was really patient, waiting with Luci in the small pen. She really appreciated her friends' company!
Luci placed 6th in the aged doe competition, but if it had been showmanship, Maura would have won hands down, she is really good at it, and getting better : )

In the goat pen...
The kids have been spending long hours in the goat pen, getting to know and bonding with Remy's new LaMancha baby as well as walking with and practicing showmanship with Luci ~ getting ready for State Fair : )
And these pictures don't show her yet, but there is another new addition to our goat family, Gia, a Nigerian dairy goat that we got just yesterday from Barbara, our fabulous Fiber Goat Leader ... as if the kids needed one more excuse to spend more time with the kids...!
And there's plenty to do inthe goat pen besides feeding and caring for them, like climbing trees, hugging, feeding them your sister's hat... or just sitting there and talking to them, like a saw Remy do one morning...he was having a very animated conversation with Bud & Little Pea.

County Fair
We had our County Fair last week, 7 whole days of barn duty and fun! And I've got to say, Ms. Maura scored in a BIG way.... she got a first place and a Best of Division Rosette for her quilt...
Then she showed Bud, who placed third in the wether class....
Here she is getting ready to go in the ring with Lucinda....
...and proudly showing her Grand Champion Flag....! Luci went on to receive a Best in

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
Lucy Goosey left today ~ As you might recall, she has been with us for quite some time. We found her injured and with her feet tied up last fall and after her recovery she just stayed with us, with the sheep, following them during the day and sleeping with them at night. We had a few scares, when on several occasions during the past few months, other Canada Geese would fly overhead, honking.. sometimes she would take flight, briefly, only to return a few moments later, and we would all exhale, not even realizing we had been holding our breath.... We had all hoped, expected her to stay with us forever... she was part of us.... until this morning. We woke up early and in a panic, Flame, our Angora Goat had escaped and was roaming freely in the yard... so naturally, we all had to rush outside to try and get her back in her pen - which was not that hard, considering that she comes to me when she sees me because I usually feed her leaves off the bushes that she can't reach.... so after getting her back in her pen, we were all still outside feeding Flame and Bud, her kid, some fresh breakfast bush leaves - when out of nowhere, a single goose flew overhead, he circled once, and Lucy took off, straight up, up and away... we held our breath for just a moment and realized this was goodbye...her mate came back for her... and she had been waiting for him....

Can you read it now....?
Per his own request, I took Remy to the Eye Doctor...things were getting blurry, he said... He had glasses made about a year ago but he seldom wears them, partly because he is always running, jumping, climbing trees, chasing sheep... So we went to see Dr. E., he has known our family since we moved here, and it is always fun to go visit...his office has this old timey feel about it... very cozy.. So after the obligatory chit chat, with Remy sitting on the chair...he started his exam, with the usual chart...
Dr. E.: Can you read this line?
Remy: No.
Dr. E.: Can you read this line?
Remy: No.
Dr. E.: How about this one...can you read this?
Remy: No.
By now, I am getting worried....is his vision really this bad...? and I have not noticed...? how could I let it get this bad....? The good doctor continued.... I could see that he was puzzled as well...
Dr.E.: Hmmm....let's try this line, can you read this one?
Remy: No.
And then it dawned on me.....
Mama: Remy, you are only supposed to read the letters, not the whole word....
Remy : Aaahh......B, D, C, L, K......

If you take a lamb to school...

I am sad to say one of Garbanzo Bean's babies, Lima Bean, died early last Wednesday... So the one that is still with us receives extra special care, and she is thriving.... She accompanied us on our adventures last week, we took her pretty much everywhere with us. Floppa went to the cattle auction, the sewing class, the ice cream store, Starbucks and even to the University, where she caused great commotion...: ) ....it was a pleasure to see Remy sharing all his knowledge of lambs and sheep with both students and professors, as well as a few laughs: "What kind of a dog is that...?"
It was nice to share the wonder of a lamb with other people, like a portable mini petting zoo : )
And then later in the week, I don't even remember when exactly, I helped deliver our first breach lamb...scary and wondrous at once ~

Chaos & Mayhem
....to say the least ~
Since my last post (and yeah, sorry it's taken so long), lots of events have transpired at Sassafras Ranch:
We started lambing!
17 baby lambs now roam our pasture.
We got a pregnant cow!
Unfortunately, the calf died in utero, and the vet had to do a fetotomy.
Remy's favorite ewe, Garbanzo Bean, passed away after delivering her twins. We are now trying to bond them to Crunchy, it's been good so far... ~ although Remy was truly heartbroken...He has loved Garbanzo since the moment he saw her. Last summer, she gave him his favorite lambs: Cocoa & Bergamot. She delivered Lima Bean & Floppy (both black, one of them with bunny-like floppy ears) last Saturday, and passed away on Tuesday.... Remy has been really good about helping them feed and he even lies down with them in the barn so they aren't lonely
Oh Yeah, and I lost my camera! ...and then I dropped the i-pod and it broke! ...so, sorry, no pics... : (
